The Hand of Man Museum in Maple Bay, British Columbia, is located in a repurposed elementary school literally stacked with unique item from around the world. At Hand of Man, you can “learn about global efforts towards conservation through education and awareness”. Highly recommended!
If we have time each year, when we return to Canada to visit family and friends in the summer, we like to go to Parksville for the long beaches and the sandsculpting. Parksville Beachfest’s sandsculpting competition includes “[m]aster sculptors from all around the world [who] apply to participate in Parksville’s annual competition each year”.
Last summer, we were fortunate to be able to experience “Beyond Van Gogh” in Victoria, BC. Held in a large empty warehouse, we walked through the introductory history and background and finally into the immersive element where we were strolling in the paintings. Extremely cool, but for one drawback (for me). While the ceiling was painted black, there were still beams, girders, and lights visible that distracted from the overall experience. That nitpicking aside, it was fabulous!
Almost 2 years ago, I finally had the opportunity to take some time and learn how to throw arrows at a stationary target. After about a year, with some past competitors and coaches from the Chinese provincial and national teams, I became more competent with a 62” recurve hunting bow at 18 meters with no sights.
Last summer, I also had an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of tossing a hand-axe towards a target with some accuracy at WildPlay in Nanaimo, BC, Canada.
I had a chance to look through a lot of old photos that my mom and sister had been holding onto. There were some of my family, our dog Sugar (named by my sister), my old ’67 Chevy II in its pre- and post-painted glory, and various clothing styles from my vicarious youth. I forgot that my hair was actually that shade of brown. ;-)
